Sapphire

Depth of Unique Memories

It is a variety of corundum, the second hardest stone existing in nature (after diamond). It is usually blue but can also have other colours, apart from red. It owes this to such elements as iron or titanium. Small inclusions cause a phenomenon called asterism which appears in some varieties of sapphire. The most desired sapphires in the world have the colour of “cornflower blue” and they come from Cashmere, Myanmar and Thailand. Those found in Sri Lanka are lighter, while Australian ones are darker, sometimes even green. Sapphires usually have a step or brilliant cut. For the darker ones, in order to highlight their features, the flat cut is the best. Star sapphires have a cabochon shape.
